Why Every Household Needs More Than One Emergency Kit

Why Every Household Needs More Than One Emergency Kit

Many people think about emergency preparedness as one backpack in a closet. That is a good start, but real preparedness means thinking about where you actually spend your time. A disaster may happen while you are at home, driving, working, visiting family, or caring for children or pets.

A home emergency kit helps your household shelter in place during power outages, storms, wildfire smoke, earthquakes, or other disruptions. A car kit helps when roads are closed, traffic is stopped, or evacuation takes longer than expected. A workplace kit matters because employees may not be able to leave right away. Preparedness should follow the person, not just the house.

Every kit does not need to be the same size. A home kit may include larger supplies such as food, water, flashlights, first aid, sanitation items, and comfort items. A car kit may be smaller and focused on water, food bars, light, warmth, phone charging, and basic safety. A workplace kit may include personal medication, snacks, water, and simple comfort supplies.

The goal is not fear. The goal is confidence. When basic supplies are already in place, people can think more clearly and make better decisions.

Preparedness is also an act of care. Think about children, older adults, people with health needs, and pets. If they depend on you during normal life, they will depend on you even more during an emergency.

LMD Disaster Survival Kits encourages every household to look at the places they spend the most time and ask one simple question: “If something happened here today, what would I wish I already had?”
